My Spiritual Journey

I want to tell you a little bit more about what it was like to paint this painting of Christ.  And in order to do that, I should take you back a bit...

Some of you might be surprised to hear that I told myself all growing up that "I can't even draw stick figures", and avoided art classes like the plague! (sound familiar anyone?)

I always admired art from afar, like it was this impossible talent I'd never have.  Finally, toward the end of high school I was forced to take a class for the required school credit and realized there was something there I didn't know was there.

My teachers were very encouraging and we all wished I had started sooner because we quickly ran out of time together.

Here are just a couple of my first assignments in class...

After graduating high school, I left this newfound hobby as exactly that - a hobby. For the next 11 years, I created art occasionally when someone requested it, but never took it too seriously.

After serving a mission for my church, getting married and having my second baby, I could feel my busy usual self growing more unsettled with my life. Late one evening was sitting in an empty church parking lot praying for help.  It was that night that I received the answer very distinctly that "I needed to become self-reliant", and I was reminded about a dream I had put on the back burner...

I had always longed to paint the Savior.

With the reminder of my heart's desire, and this clear guidance from God, I felt encouraged to try. I knew that regardless the outcome, I would be thankful for the experience.

I also knew that even though I'd only taken those couple classes in high school, that if the Lord was asking me to do this, He would "prepare the way" (1 Nephi 3:7)

I started the next day sewing robes and planning for a photoshoot to get the images I'd need.

Later as I went to the store to pick out a canvas, I was very much planning on purchasing a small one. To my surprise, I felt the spirit guiding me as I was in the store past these canvases I had in mind to bigger and bigger ones until I stopped in front of the size that I knew I would be taking home that day.

The canvas I painted on was 48X36 inches and to date is the largest painting I've created...

The spiritual guidance I received did not end there. Throughout this entire process I have been stretched to come to know the Lord's will for this painting and my future.  I've had to repeatedly submit my own ideas, expectations, and fears and lay them at my Father's feet.  He has stretched my mind, talents, and expectations far beyond anything I could conceive, repeatedly asking me to "keep going" and to "share my gifts with the world."

So here I am doing just that, knowing full well, that this is only the beginning...

The piece "It is I" was finished in the fall of 2017 and is now ready for you to have in your home.

It is my prayer that every time you see it, you know without a doubt that you are loved with a power beyond measure.  Our Savior knows you by name.  He sees you and He loves you with power beyond measure.
